Home Video Games and Health For Gamers Desiring to Get Fit

by Vee, under Gamers & Gaming

Video gamers have usually been derided as people who just sit around and push buttons on a controller all day. However, as new technologies continue to emerge, video gamers have increasingly been getting off their duff and game systems require actual movement. Meanwhile, extended tournaments require physical stamina. It appears that despite what people judge about gamers, they are more active each day.

While new gaming systems are revolutionizing the way that players participate with the games, some games requiring physical movement have been around for many years. These include party game winners such as Dance Dance Revolution, in which players bust dance routines on a pad.

Other games in arcades included balancing techniques and movement, such as skateboarding simulations. There have also been basketball hoop games and other sports related games. Additionally, laser tag, a spin off of video games and virtual reality, has been a mainstay of gamers. These arcade games showed that physical ability in combination with video games can be very fun and worthwhile, and they opened the door for the next stage of advancement.

With the Nintendo Wii, these early beginnings of adding physical movement into a video game experience have exploded into entirely novel ideas. Now the video game controller is actually a motion sensitive device which allows you to act out a video game like you were the character in the video game. This can mean swinging an axe or jumping over a barrier.

The power of this technology has also led to the introduction of video games that are designed to promote fitness. The best example is Wii Fitness, which records your weight and your results as you engage in multiple movements. These games appeal not only to video gamers, but to people from all walks of life looking to combine activity with joy.

Another element of gaming that has removed gamers off their butts has been video game competitions. This might seem counter intuitive, after all long competitions involve extended periods of time sitting down and playing a game. However, these competitions require a great deal of physical and mental endurance. This often requires players to prepare themselves for long contests.

Between competitions that need physical stamina, to arcade games of the past and the Nintendo Wii, video games are embedding more and more fitness and exercise aspects. The slothful stereotype just doesn’t stick as easily any longer. And video games, once the area of only heavy gamers, now appeal to a growing demographic of people of all ages.
